Starfield, Bethesda’s ambitious sci-fi RPG, has been out for a few months now, and players have been exploring its vast and varied galaxy. However, as with all Bethesda games, players who want more than the vanilla experience have already been using mods to improve, tweak, or overhaul various aspects of the game and even add new content.
Starfield does not yet have the official mod tools from Bethesda, but that has not stopped modders from providing significant mod support for the game. At the time of writing, Starfield now has 6,500 mods, giving it the 12th highest number of mods, putting it ahead of Juggernauts like The Witcher 3 and Baldur’s Gate 3. Starfield also ranks as number 17 in download count, with the most popular mod “StarUI Inventory” boasting an impressive 1.4 million downloads, alongside “Script Extender” with 1.2 million downloads.
According to Starfield’s director Todd Howard, “Once mods are supported, you’ll be able to do almost anything, just like in our previous games,”. The official modding tools, known as the Creation Kit, is expected to be released in 2024. The Creation Kit will allow players to access a lot of the tools Bethesda used to make the game and create more advanced and complex mods with greater ease.
Until then, modders have to rely on other methods to modify the game files, such as hex editing, reverse engineering, or using third-party tools. Some of these methods are risky, as they can corrupt the game data, cause crashes, or introduce bugs. However, some modders are willing to take the risk, and have managed to create some impressive and popular mods for Starfield.
